Freight truck driver Miguel Jose Gil, who was kidnapped in Haiti last Wednesday, has been rescued by the Minustah, the United Nations peacekeeping force. The Haitian gang was demanding US$100,000 ransom. The Dominican consul in the Haitian border town of Ouanaminthe, Santiago Caba said that the kidnappers fled when the forces surrounded their hideout. Gil had been kept captive in a small house in Limonade, near Cap-Haitien. He is from Las Charcas, Santiago, where he lives with his wife and six children. Gil said he had been mistreated by the kidnappers who had threatened to kill him if the ransom was not paid.
Dominican transporters had threatened to blockade the border if their colleague was not freed.
