In what is suspected to have been a dispute over a multi-million-peso debt, the owner of the Presidente Sport betting store was injured by Police General Ricardo Emilio Rodriguez Taveras on Saturday, outside Tony Roma's restaurant on Av. Sarasota in Santo Domingo. Rodriguez injured Eliezer Salvador who was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Abel Gonzalez Clinic, where he is said to be in a stable condition.
Carlos Olivares, the lawyer representing Salvador, said that his client had been threatened and because of that on Friday they had taken the complaint to the Police and on Saturday morning to the Permanent Attention Center of the Justice.
El Nacional reported the Police said it would prosecute Rodriguez, accused of injuring Salvador.
Lawyer Rigoberto Rosario, representing Salvador said that that his client went to collect a debt of more than RD$20 million from Anibal Ramirez (Come Hoyo) won at a bet at the Hotel Melia Casino. Ramirez was delaying making the payment and was summoned to the restaurant.
He said that when Salvador arrived at the restaurant he was met with two bullets, one in the back and another in the abdomen, in what he described as a crude attempt to avoid paying the money the victim had won from "Come Hoyo." Rosario said that they understand the general is a close friend of Come Hoyo and accompanied him to pressure to pay only part of the money and not all as claimed by the injured.
El Dia reports that Rodriguez is an active police general, who had been retired on 22 August 2009 but was reinstated on 26 October 2009 by President Fernandez.
