Luis Castillo Encarnacion said he had nothing to hide, but last week resisted being searched by National Drug Control Department agents fearing he would become a victim of extortion in southwestern Azua. As reported in Diario Libre, he told the press that when El Yankee (a DNCD agent in Azua) tried to search him he refused. He was beaten up by the agent, and a brawl resulted, with the deaths by gunshots from DNCD agents of father of nine Bernardo Ramirez and Betsaida Frometa, both innocent bystanders. 10 others were injured.
Encarnacion denounced he knew the case of Dony Ricardo in Azua who had to pay RD$12,000 after being extorted.
DNCD chief Rolando Rosado Mateo has been in Azua since Friday to investigate the case, which is being denounced as an abuse by the DNCD. He admitted the response of the agents had been disproportionate and promised the abuse would not go unpunished. He said the staff in Azua was already under investigation for irregularities that had been reported.
Rosado Mateo said that others in Azua had accused El Yankee of exortion, but there was no proof to incriminate him. Frometa's widower, Don Dionisio, told reporters that his wife had been killed by "uniformed criminals".
