Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez has announced new initiatives to encourage mothers of newborn babies to breastfeed for the first six months. Rojas Gomez reminded the baby milk industry that Law 8-95 on Support for Breastfeeding and Ruling 31-96 regulates the marketing of substitutes for mother's milk. He said penalties would be applied to companies that promote substitute products. This could include the suspension of a product that violates this law.
Rojas Gomez said, "The rules establish that in all health centers, be they public or private, the promotion and advertising of this type of product is banned."
Rojas Gomez spoke on the occasion of the celebration of the start of International Breastfeeding Week at the Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia Maternity Hospital, the country's largest.
