Ricardo Emilio Rodriguez Taveras, the general who is accused of injuring Eliezer Salvador (El Shey), owner of the Presidente Sport betting company, in a shootout at Tony Roma's restaurant on Saturday at around 10:30pm, had been retired on 17 November 2009 with presidential decree 552-09. Interestingly, he had originally been retired on 22 August 2009 with Decree 625-09, but then was reinstated to the Police with a Decree 789-09 dated 26 October 2009, as reported in El Dia.
The military officer was accompanying Anibal Ramirez (Come Hoyo, also known as Hector Ramirez Pinedo), to whom Eliezar Salvador demanded payment of a debt that news sources said amounted to RD$20 million. Reportedly, Rodriguez was requesting a two-month extension for Ramirez to pay the debt. This resulted in a brawl, in which Rodriguez fired the shots that injured Salvador.
Diario Libre reports that the case against the retired general and Ramirez (Come Hoyo) would be heard today in court.
