Writing in today's Hoy, journalist Emely Tueni comments on the criticism that the apparent waves of sympathy Dominicans have expressed for Sobeida Felix, a woman who appears to be some sort of snake charmer.
"Particularly, I do not believe, that the apparent complacency that groups of people have shown towards this alleged narco money launderer is because of lack of morals, or an inversion of values, ignorance, etc. Rather it is the people making fun of the confused actions by the authorities in charge of the Figueroa Agosto (or Junior Capsula) case.
"It is a kind of dangerous derision, or popular challenge with cynical touch, that little by little, could make us lose or reduce the respect towards the institutions that are called upon to keep order in the country and in the state in general.
"What is happening is that people of all social strata are convinced, or have the belief, that those bodies, and Justice itself, are not walking on the straight and narrow. Citizens feel deceived, mocked, with so many lies and concealment of information when it comes to the scandalous drug trafficking cases and other matters, with ties to important figures in the local political, military and business world.
"In the particular case of Agosto and Sobeida, there is the perception that the in-depth truth will never be known nor will anyone 'sacred' be linked to the case."
