Despite having been sentenced to 20 years by the Second Collegiate Court of the Penal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of the National District dated 15 December 2008, Juan Reynaldo Ramirez Rendon was freed and it is now known that he returned to working in drug trafficking.
He made headlines again last week when he was arrested in possession of 97.7 kilos of cocaine confiscated in Los Frailes, Santo Domingo East, inside a Mitsubishi Montero parked at Calle 3 No. 5.
The sentence against him had been annulled by the National District Court of Appeals, which ordered his release on RD$10 million bail and a new case against Ramirez and other individuals claiming that his constitutional rights had been violated by the first instance court that first heard the case.
As reported in El Dia, on Sunday, 1 August 2010 Ramirez Rendon was sent to La Victoria jail by Judge Yessenia Arias Morales with five other individuals (Delio Reyes De Leon, Alisanti Antonio Hernandez Polanco, Hector Jose Cabrera Diez and Homero Cristobal Ramirez Rondon) as part of the latest drug roundup.
He had been previously arrested on 8 November 2005 with 442 packages of cocaine, with fellow Colombian Jaime Alonzo Calle Munoz (alias Jairo), who was killed just a few hours after he obtained his release on bail. Ramirez was convicted of that charge in December 2008, sent to 20 years in prison, and ordered to pay a fine of RD$1 million. Diario Libre reports that Victor Rafael Feliz Ovalles who was arrested with him, shared the same sentence.
The newspaper says that the Third Collegiate Court of the Penal Chamber of the First Instance of the National District has set the hearing of the case against Juan Reynaldo Ramirez Rendon and Victor Rafael Feliz Ovalles for trafficking in 442.55 kilos of cocaine for 23 August.
Ramirez Rendon was released on bail by the Second Collegiate Court, while Calle Munoz was released by the First Court of Instruction, as reported in El Dia.
