Argentinean security expert Hector Luis Saint Pierre, here for the II International Conference on Security and Defense in the Americas: Trends and Strategy, told Hoy in an interview that the war against drugs is a stupid, useless and lost cause. He called for a fight against crime in all its manifestations, mainly corruption. "Organized crime has its judges, its senators, its deputies. It has an entire political structure at its service, with police, judges, etc. and that is what has to be confronted," he said.
"The nucleus of everything is money, the capital that circulates that buys weapons, that finances the trafficking, that manufactures the inputs for distilling cocaine. The companies, chemical industries that are accepting the money of drug trafficking and are laundering money," he said.
He called for the struggle against corruption to fight trafficking. He said that corruption greases the criminal machinery.
Saint Pierre believes that legalizing drugs would solve much of the drug trafficking problem. "Without crime there is no business. The business of crime is one of illegality, that is why by legalizing the business of drugs we take away a part of the business."
Saint Pierre spoke of the political campaigns that are financed with drug money. "Whoever is elected, then is kidnapped by the criminal groups," he explained.
The conference begins today and is open at the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode) at 26 Capitan Eugenio de Marchena Street.
Delegates will discuss security risks and transnational threats at the regional, hemispheric and global levels. These include discussions on drug trafficking in the Caribbean, Colombia and Mexico, money laundering, digital crimes, private security and the influence of the media in national security, among other topics.
