Peravia senator Wilton Guerrero has accused the National Drug Control Department's office in the southwestern province of Azua of being the country's largest drug micro-trafficking cartel.
At a press conference, he described the killing of two innocent farmers, and injuring of several others in a clash in Azua earlier this week as a massacre and blamed DNCD agents for the killing.
"The bloodbath was caused by a patrol made up of men who have no respect for human life, whose only thought is to make a buck in any way they can and who were patrolling an area that is infected with many drug points that they protect and charge tolls from the vendors and were looking for innocent victims to take them to the clandestine court that operated in their own office, where they extorted sums ranging from 10, 20 or 30 thousand pesos," said the legislator.
DNCD spokesman Ramon Alcides Rodriguez Veras said that the Azua staff is under investigation.
Luis Castillo Encarnacion, who survived the bloodbath in Azua, told he resisted being searched by National Drug Control Department agents fearing he would become a victim of extortion. When he resisted, he said El Yankee (a DNCD agent in Azua) beat him up with his gun and a softball bat, and a brawl ensued when villagers defended him, with the deaths by gunshots from DNCD agents of father of nine Bernardo Ramirez and Betsaida Frometa, both innocent bystanders. 10 others were injured. Encarnacion claimed that he knew of a case involving Dony Ricardo in Azua who had to pay RD$12,000 after being extorted.
