The PRD says that the administration could take a series of economic steps and save some RD$39 billion, eliminating the need to use any pension money as has been proposed by President Fernandez. According to Hoy newspaper, PRD president Miguel Vargas is saying that both he and his Economic Commission are recommending a series of steps that will save money and avoid the risk of using the workers' pension fund.
During a press conference at the PRD National Headquarters, he said that the government could save RD$5 billion by reducing its advertising budget. They could save RD$18 billion by eliminating the payrolls that carry party members at the base and intermediate levels, and by eliminating the luxurious apartments for officials they could save another RD$1.1 billion. The PRD said that the government could save RD$7.2 billion by eliminating projects and purchases without any bidding. They pointed out that RD$5 billion could be saved by suspending the second Metro line for the rest of 2010 and RD$900 million in salary cuts for officials with huge salaries. The list of savings also included a half billion-peso reduction in per diems, expense accounts and travel expenses.
