The National Police have detained three people in connection with the murder of Dr Sergio Rafael Rojas Soriano near Santo Domingo's Botanical Gardens earlier this week. A source close to the investigations confirmed that they were being held "for questioning", adding that they were friends of the people on four motorcycles who committed the crime.
The investigators believe that the killers are "common criminals" who tried to rob the doctor but that he was armed and had resisted.
However, based on the way in which the event happened with an accurate shot at close range, there has been speculation that they were hit men pursuing a specific target. On Wednesday evening reporters Juan Bolivar Diaz, Fausto Rosario Adames, Jean Michel Caroit and Fernando Hasbun met with President Leonel Fernandez and told him about an alleged plot to kill the director of the weekly newspaper Clave and the online news site Clave Digital, Fausto Rosario. Fernandez reportedly ordered the Chief of the National Police to protect the life of the journalist who led the weekly newspaper for five years. According to rumors, the killers mistook the doctor for Fausto Rosario, who said that a high-ranking Police officer had called him to set up a meeting minutes after the murder. Rosario confirmed that both media would cease publication yesterday.
