Armed Forces Minister Lieutenant General Rafael Pena Antonio revealed yesterday that a lieutenant colonel and a major are under investigation in the case of Puerto Rican drug baron Jose David Figueroa Agosto, and that both men are under arrest in their respective institutions. Including these two, four officers are now detained in connection with the Agosto case. Two officers have been held at the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) jail since early July. Nevertheless, the high-ranking officer would not release the names of either of the officers who are members of the Army and the Air Force.
"We are not giving out names because we are in the investigative phase and I expect you to understand", said Pena Antonio while being questioned by reporters at the headquarters of the First Brigade of the National Army, where he was accompanying President Leonel Fernandez at the inauguration of new dining halls for the enlisted men and officers.
He said that both officers were "on 'stand-by', as we say, which means that they have not been discharged". Likewise, he said that in the last two years the Armed Forces have discharged more than two thousand members, many of them involved in drug trafficking business and the rest for crimes like extortion and other criminal activities. Nonetheless, he said that the Dominican Republic is still one of the safest countries and he added that it has to do with perception that the people think that there is a lot of crime.
