Dengue continues to overwhelm public hospitals in Santiago. The disease has claimed 20 victims so far in the central province this year. The number of cases in Santiago is triple that of last year, mainly due to the heavy rains this year that have created the optimum conditions for mosquito breeding, compared to last year, which was relatively dry.
The latest casualty was a 16-year old girl. Her father said that the doctor who examined had been negligent because he did not send her for the required blood tests, and as a result she was not diagnosed in time. When she returned to the hospital it was already too late to save her life.
Santiago is the province that has reported the largest number of cases, and the public children's hospital, Arturo Grullon is overwhelmed, with as many as three patients having to share one hospital bed.
Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said he hopes that once back in school students can join the campaign to eliminate mosquito-breeding areas to stop the disease.
Meanwhile, Rafael Mena, president of the National Association of Clinics, said they have treated 10,000 cases nationwide. Mena, a pediatrician, says that the rains, heat and humidity have also led to an increase in respiratory diseases among children.
