For the 23rd time, a court hearing of the case against builders of a high-rise luxury apartment building in Los Cacicazgos, next to the Dominican Fiesta Hotel, has been postponed. The case is to be heard at the Justice of Peace for Municipal affairs, but this time the person responsible for the construction turned up without their lawyers, and the representative of state prosecutors said he had not studied the case and his colleague was on vacation. The construction of the 30-floor high-rise has been paralyzed for a year after it was opposed by neighborhood groups. The next session is scheduled for 27 August at the court located at Calle Sajona, in Manganagua.
Rita Espaillat de Valdez, president of the Los Cacicazgos residents association told Hoy that the company responsible for the Torre de Plata is trying to delay the case to wear down the residents association that opposes the construction. The residents association says the tower was started in violation to rulings. They say it did not have plans approved by the authorities, Public Works licenses, or permits from the Ministry of Environment. The neighborhood group is calling for the tower to be demolished.
Their lawyer, Miriam Paulino, says that the tower's promoters are seeking to delay proceedings so that the three-year term granted by the Penal Code will end up extinguishing the court case.
