Javier Tudela, president of the Cultural Capitals of the World movement, is in Santo Domingo to present awards for the seven cultural heritage treasures of the American Cultural Capital. The winners of the poll to choose the treasures were the Columbus Alcazar, the Cathedral, the Ozama Fort, the Museum of Royal Houses, the Botanical Garden, the Malecon and the Palace of Fine Arts.
Tudela said that Santo Domingo is receiving international recognition for its cultural activities. "Now we are in the eighth month and even though at the start the project was not known, things have changed favorably. I believe the event is now well known and the news has also spread in a positive way abroad," he told Diario Libre. He expects that when the cultural year closes on 31 December, Santo Domingo will be an example of an American Capital of Culture. He forecast this would better position the city for visits.
Events are organized under the Ministry of Culture.
