The Public Electricity Corporation expects a deficit of US$788.6 million this year, similar to last year's US$700 million deficit. The government allocated US$380 million in the budget, but the CDEEE needs an additional US$350 million to meet its commitments this year, according to a report in Listin Diario. The CDEEE maintains US$160 million arrears with private generators.
According to the CDEEE, the power distribution companies collect around US$100.3 million a month, for US$1,203.6 million a year. Losses are estimated at around 40%. The projected deficits are US$232.2 million for EdeNorte, US$228.3 million for EdeSur and US$128.2 million for EdeEste.
Reportedly, instead of a reduction, the electricity subsidy has been increased as collections have not increased at the desired pace.
