The College of Visual Arts is protesting about the government's plan sale of their headquarters at Calle El Conde. President Balaguer donated the colonial building at #58 to them in 1991, but several years later, Leoncio Almanzar, then director of real estate investments at CORDE, the consortium of government enterprises which has since been privatized, sold it to businessman Eduardo Jana Pineiro at a bargain price, as reported in Diario Libre. Jana now wants the artists to move out so he can set up a restaurant at the prime location. As Ines Aizpun reports in today's Diario Libre, the organization that represents visual artists in the DR is under pressure to accept another location.
Aizpun backs the artists' decision to hold on to their Calle El Conde premises. She says that this way they could set a positive precedent.
