The government has decided to use the US digital radio and television transmissions system. The system will be phased in gradually over about five years, according to Rafael Vargas, the head of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel). The official order was made in presidential decree #407-10, said Vargas, in an announcement made at the Presidential Palace Green Room yesterday.
Vargas said that owners of television channels, cable services and radio stations have five years to adapt to the digital system. "Dominican TV's analog blackout will take place in September 2015. This is the most complete phase of development, the most important for Dominican TV since its start in the 1950s," he said.
He said that the General Customs Agency (DGA) would provide the facilities required to import the equipment that these stations will need to adapt to the new system. He also announced that CERTV, the official government channel, would be making digital transmissions of the congressional sessions starting on Monday, 16 August. He said that the system had been tested at the state TV station (CERTV).
The new standard for digital TV standard is known as ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee). The telecom authorities had also considered the Japanese, European and Chinese standards.
ATSC has replaced much of the analog NTSC television system in the United States. It was also chosen for Canada and Mexico. But in Latin America, the Japanese-Brazilian standard has prevailed.
