President Leonel Fernandez and First Lady Margarita Cedeno attended the formal opening of the plush Blue Mall yesterday. The project, which was developed by the Grupo de Empresas Velutini & Asociados, is said to have cost US$98 million. The official blessing was made by Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez.
The mall, which occupies 22,358 square meters at the intersection of Winston Churchill and Gustavo Mejia Ricart avenues in Santo Domingo, first opened its doors to the public several weeks ago with the promotion of the Louis Vuitton store. It features a range of stores selling luxury goods, including Carolina Herrera, Salvatore Farragamo, Cartier and others in the mid-budget range such as Timberland and Liz Claiborne.
Speaking at the opening, President Fernandez said that the mall is proof of continued progress and modern advances in the DR.
The five-floor mall contains almost 100 stores and 1,000 underground parking spaces. As part of its inaugural activities, for every RD$1,000 purchased, customers will receive a raffle ticket for a Porsche. Former Miss Universe, Dominican Amelia Vega sang songs from her first CD.
Key executives of the mall, Luis Emilio Velutini Urbina, Luis Carlos Serra Carmona, Olga Manzo de Velutini and Maria Fernanda Sanchez de Serra, promoters of the mall welcomed guests to the opening.
