The three associations of used car importers will begin the process of releasing around 6,000 vehicles from Customs today. These vehicles are in all of the nation's ports, and the move follows an agreement between the importers and Customs (DGA) Director Rafael Camilo. The DGA agreed to follow the customary tariff practice of former years. Cesar de los Santos, speaking for the National Association of Vehicle Distributors (Anadive), the Association of Used Car Importers (Asocivu), and the Association of Dealers of the Cibao (Adeci) disclosed the news after their meeting with the head of Customs.
Some 1,100 importers, members of these associations, had refused to withdraw their vehicles from the ports on the grounds that Customs was trying to charge them new tariffs, higher than the rates charged just a few days ago. They also complained that they were being subjected to a different set of rules to those applied to new car importers. De los Santos thanked Camilo for the courtesy and comprehension given to the associations. De los Santos said that Camilo had also called another meeting for next Wednesday to discuss how the import of used cars will be handled.
