The Municipal Council approved 200 pensions for public servants and another 11 for city council members during a highly charged session. In this last session of the current municipal administration, which reached a quorum by means of individual invitations, pensions equal to 60% of the salaries were granted to municipal employees between the ages of 70 and 80, but many who did not meet these conditions managed to get medical certification of disabilities, including most of the city council members.
"Of all of the city council members, the only one who qualified on length of service was Mario Matias who has been serving the council for 24 years, but the other council members all have medical certificates, but I don't know if or how they obtained them fairly", said Carlos Tavarez Fanini, the head of the city council Evaluation and Labor Affairs Commission.
The people blessed with pensions belong to the PRD, the PRSC and the Dominicans for Change Party (DxC). Tavarez said that the council members would receive 30% of their salaries unless they are certified as completely incapacitated. The mayor's sister, Benny Sued received a pension of RD$8,500 of the RD$25,000 she had requested.
