The construction of Santiago's new Public Park is on hold because the Ministry of Public Works does not have the funds to meet the billion-peso investments required by the companies that won the tender, as reported in Diario Libre. The 1.5 km Santiago Central Metropolitan Park is due to be built in the former Santiago international airport location. The builders presented a budget for RD$1.5 billion, including sports areas, and an amphitheater for 2,000 persons. The project also includes plans for 12 apartment towers in the vicinity, a north-south crossover overpass. The park is part of recent overvaluation controversies, after the landscaping project called for a RD$416 million budget for purchasing of trees in a contract that was allocated to Margarita Gomez, who is already known for her outstanding spending to furnish the Supreme Court of Justice building in Santo Domingo.
