The United Nations Development Program has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education to improve the public school breakfast program. The US$10 million program will be jointly implemented by the Ministry of Education, the World Food Program and the Pan-American Health Organization.
Education Minister Melanio Paredes said that the UN is helping the Ministry to review the School Food Program (PAE) to improve nutritional levels, and manage and distribute the breakfast snacks. The process is being reviewed from production to delivery to the public school students. Paredes also said that the UN is helping to draft a protocol on how the government will intervene in cases of poisoning, regulating the analysis of the samples. He said the authorities are evaluating the performance of the suppliers in the past school year prior to contracting later this month.
Valerie Julliand, resident representative of the UNDP, signed for the organization. One of the early recommendations is that the Ministry of Education should pay the suppliers on time.
