Police chief Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin has announced the remodeling and equipping of the Vehicle Theft Investigation Department (Plan Piloto) in Santo Domingo's Honduras neighborhood. It is now air conditioned and computerized. It was almost completely overhauled, with new floors, electricity, glass doors and bathrooms.
The department is also in charge of issuing certificates for verification of vehicles, change of color, transfers, among other forms. The staff there verifies that a vehicle has no claims for robbery, alteration of chassis number, prior to authorizing the transfer of ownership. It operates on a national level.
As reported in Hoy, on average six vehicles are stolen in the country each day. Guzman Fermin says this is down from a daily average of 36, six years ago.
