Santiago explosion could have been prevented

The director of Digenor, the government body that regulates quality standards, says the propane gas explosion in Santiago could have been prevented. Fernando Santos said that the propane gas distributor that exploded in Tamboril, Santiago causing serious burns to 14 people and destroying a meat products factory and several adjacent houses had been notified they had to correct anomalies in 2009. Santos said that despite the notification the propane gas distributor continued to operate without making the corrections. Investigators say that the explosion was caused by a leak in one of the hoses that connected the gas tank to the dispensers. The hose was in poor condition due to prolonged use. The explosion is said to have caused RD$40 million worth of material losses.
