Presidency press and public relations director Rafael Nunez, one of President Leonel Fernandez's closest aides, launched his almost 200-page book at the Salon de la Cultura of the National Theater yesterday: "Figueroa Agosto, the Power of Narco". Diario Libre director Adriano Miguel Tejada introduced the author and the book. Also present were National Drug Control Department director Rolando Rosado Mateo and Police chief Rafael Guillermo Guzman, and Javier Pena, regional director of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Attending were Osvaldo Santana of El Caribe and Rafael Molina Morillo of El Dia. Also present was Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia.
In its coverage of the book launch, El Caribe reports that an undercover agent planted in the cell of Mary Pelaez, arrested for complicity in money laundering with Jose David Figueroa Agosto, confirmed to the authorities that Jose David Figueroa Agosto was in Puerto Rico.
The book reveals that since then Guzman Fermin and Rosado Mateo made five trips to Puerto Rico to share information. When Figueroa Agosto's capture was imminent they sent their families to live abroad after receiving threats.
The book establishes that Felix Morel's sister Daysi, who led to his capture registered as Daysi Franco Morel on her flight in Puerto Rico. Reportedly, she had two videos in her handbag: The Dolls of the Mafia and El Capo. As reported in El Caribe, the book reveals that the files on Figueroa Agosto's 2001 arrest in the DR under the identity of Felipe Rodriguez de la Rosa have disappeared from the DNCD.
Nunez said he wrote the book using his journalist's hat, not as a government official. He said that several government members were against the publication of the book.
