The government of the Dominican Republic answered Costa Rica on Thursday, indicating that they were willing to reach an understanding with the dialogue that both countries have been engaged in without the need for friction in the commercial relationship between the two countries.
Vice President Rafael Alburquerque said that both governments through their ministers of Commerce were working on the situation created by the differences in the implementation of the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement.
Costa Rica had threatened to take the case to the WTO-the World Trade Organization if it was not solved by the ministers.
The Costa Rican minister of Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzalez, said at a press conference that the main problem is that the Dominican Republic is applying measures on Costa Rican products to protect local interests, something that is against the DR-CAFTA accords. The Dominican argument is that Costa Rican products enjoy special tax privileges that give them unfair advantages.
