Jeremy Freehill, in charge of the Santo Domingo mission of the United Nations Population Fund, has told Hoy newspaper that 159 out of every 100,000 women giving birth in the DR die in childbirth. He said this is excessively high because 98% of all births in the DR take place in hospitals. He told the paper that the figure should stand at half that amount, and attributed the high level to deficiencies in medical care by doctors when dealing with obstetric complications. Nevertheless, he said that the rate has dropped since 2002.
Freehill also commented that one in every five teenagers aged 14 to 19 has been or is pregnant. He said that is the highest rate in Latin America and the Caribbean.
During the same interview, Lilian Reneau-Vernon, representative of the Pan-American Health Organization, called for better quality health care to reduce deaths from dengue. She said that as of the end of July, 6,387 suspected dengue cases had been reported. Of these 10% (638) were cases of hemorrhagic dengue with 40 deaths, most of them children. She said that there is a 3% death rate, when it should not be higher than 1%.
She said that PAHO had issued an epidemiological alert in July in response to an increase in dengue cases in the Americas.
