The swearing in ceremony for the 4,036 government officials elected in the 16 May election took place on 16 August. The posts were 32 senators and 183 deputies who were elected for a six-year period. Also, 155 city mayors, 155 deputy mayors, 1,149 city councilors and their substitutes, and 229 directors and 229 deputy directors of municipal boards, in addition to members of those bodies. The officials will serve in these posts until 16 August 2016.
The PLD's Reinaldo Pared Perez will continue to head the Senate, and Abel Martinez, also of the PLD, will head the Chamber of Deputies. The ruling PLD party has 31 of the 32 senators, in addition to its ally PRSC that has one senator. In the Chamber of Deputies, the PLD has 105 members, and the PRD 75 and the PRSC 3, according to Hoy. Of the 32 senators, 20 were re-elected.
PRSC senator Amable Aristy Castro was not sworn in. This is the third time he has been elected senator for La Altagracia province and has chosen not to take up his seat. He is the head of the Dominican Municipal League, the government organization that manages city government funds.
The PLD needs to choose a replacement for El Seibo senator, Manuel Ramon Antonio Jacobo who died shortly after being elected.
While for most decisions, the ruling PLD party and the government will have the majority in Congress, for others where the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote of those present in the session, the vote of PRD opposition party deputies may be necessary. If all deputies are present, the PLD will need 122 votes to achieve two thirds.
