Writing in Hoy, transport expert Hamlet Hermann says that it is just a matter of time before the overpasses built by the government over leading highways become obsolete. He says citizens will remember this happening with those built over the 27 de Febrero. "If this is that way, whose head could be thinking that by giving access to more vehicles by way of the overpasses traffic is going to improve? Won't they just continue on to the bottlenecks that exist for years. Of course. It is a matter of logic. Stupid."
Hermann accuses the Brazilian construction "cartel" of the problems in store for the future. "It must be clarified that this construction cartel is voracious, while not ignorant. They know well that the solution to traffic is not in facilitating the circulation of light vehicles on those overpasses while they prohibit the transport of trucks and buses."
He claims that the transport sector in the Dominican government is in the hands of the construction cartel. "They do not opt to collective transport with buses, as President Fernandez tried to do in 1996, because there are no benefits to be had in bank commissions, overpricing, or hidden maneuvers".
He makes the point that the cartel does not care about the chaos that their unplanned constructions cause and that they don't take pedestrian safety into account in their designs.
"This is that way. We are faced with unacceptable complicity between the Dominican construction cartel and the Brazilian companies, which appear to have no limits in their desire for profits. Meanwhile, the traffic problems in Santo Doming are worsening and the bottlenecks increase while we keep waiting for the promised solutions."
