The Police have announced plans to step up efforts to stop young people who speed race along major avenues after midnight. Raul Vila, 25, crashed his vehicle into a lamppost on Av. Abraham Lincoln near the intersection with Gustavo Mejia Ricart on Monday, 16 August at around 12:45am. He died later the same day at around 3:30pm, as reported in Listin Diario.
Hoy reports that Raul Vila had exchanged vehicles with his father at a wedding he attended with his family. Reportedly, he had left the wedding reception after an argument with his girlfriend.
The official preliminary version from the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) is that he was speeding and crashed into the lamppost when trying to avoid a motorcycle delivery driver. His Ferrari practically split in two. He was taken to the nearby Abel Gonzalez clinic but died shortly after. He was buried in Higuey on Tuesday morning. The story was circulated to young people all around the country.
