The never-ending-story repeated itself once again yesterday as the 2010-2011 school year got off to a slow start in the nation's public and private schools. Few parents sent their children to the public schools, in contrast to the private schools.
Meanwhile, President Fernandez and his First Lady headed the ceremonial opening of the school year by inaugurating the new Mother Rafaela Ybarra Polytechnic School in Las Caobas in Santo Domingo West. Minister of Education Melanio Paredes also attended the opening of the RD$120 million school.
While some children were absent in many schools, the teachers were on the job. Principals at several schools said that parents had told them that they were not able to send their children because they had not acquired the necessary school supplies. Other parents went to the schools to complete the registration process.
At the Republic of Argentina Public High School in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone, for example, of 500 registered students, only about 50 showed up for the first day of classes. At the Ramon Emilio Jimenez Public High School in Los Mina, just 100 of the 1,000 students were present on opening day. Over in Villa Juana, the community used trucks with loudhailers to remind children and even made announcements in local churches, but less than half of the 1,050 students came to class yesterday.
