In response to widespread criticism, Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez annulled the RD$50,000 monthly salary increase for senators yesterday. Nonetheless, the National District representative said that sooner or later some adjustments would have to be made, since, in his words, there is a distortion between deputies and senators' salaries: "Retired senators receive less than retired deputies, therefore a distortion has been created, but despite this, we decided to put this salary increase aside", stated the PLD senator.
According to Pared Perez, ever since the salary increase for the deputies, the members of the Congress Social Provision Institute have complained that the same has not happened with the members of the Upper Chamber, a situation that has created a salary distortion. The re-elected Senate president was interviewed by reporters at the Presidential Palace after meeting with Presidency Minister Cesar Pina Toribio.
One of the factors that swayed Pared Perez to annul the salary hike was the interpretation of Article 140 of the Constitution on the regulation of salary increases. The article stipulates that no public institution or autonomous entity that handles public funds can establish rules or dispositions aimed at increasing salaries or benefits for office holders or directors, except for a period after that for which they were elected.
