The new National Police chief, Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, said during his swearing-in ceremony yesterday that he would focus mainly on crime prevention. During his speech, the new Major General of the National Police said that he would not "put peaceful coexistence at risk" and assured that "he would work to continue strengthening crime prevention". Polanco Gomez said that this strategy "would limit criminals' scope of action". The former director of Criminal Investigations said that according to several indicators on criminality in Latin America there are signs that citizen safety exists in this country, and for this reason he plans to continue the Democratic Security project.
He invited police personnel "to be prudent, tolerant, and respectful of the institution of the Republic, the laws and the international conventions". He defended the notion that crime prevention "is one of the principal points of the institution".
Polanco Gomez called on officers and enlisted personnel to ensure that "the actions of the institution are directed at supporting development and democracy in the country". The major general said that during his tenure in office, he "would be a faithful defender of the Constitution and the law" Polanco Gomez is a lawyer who graduated from the Universidad del Caribe. He entered the Police in 1981 and has held several posts in the areas of intelligence, crime prevention and anti-drug organizations. He was the supervisor of La Victoria Jail and has worked as regional supervisor in San Francisco de Macoris, Bani, Santiago, and other provinces. He has taken courses in the United States, Puerto Rico and Colombia.
