The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) says that rains will continue with some scattered electrical storms around the country. They said that people should be on alert for possible flooding of streets and underpasses in the National District and in the provinces. Onamet director Gloria Ceballos reported that the provinces subject to alerts are San Pedro de Macoris, Monte Plata, La Vega, Monsignor Nouel (Bonao), Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, Peravia (Bani), Azua, San Jose de Ocoa and Barahona.
The rains are caused by a tropical wave currently located over the country. Residents of low-lying areas are warned to be on the lookout for flooding and landslides. Ceballos said that while there is a chance that the system might develop into a tropical disturbance or storm, it is not likely to happen while it is over the Dominican Republic. Recent heavy rains have caused damage to several highways, particularly the Tourist Highway between Santiago and Puerto Plata. Landslides at several points along the road have made travel nearly impossible and forced drivers to use the much longer highway through Navarrete.
