The Ministry of Higher Education confirms that it has ordered the closure of Universidad Eugenio Maria de Hostos (Unirehmos) University, as published in Listin Diario on Saturday. Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo said that the university was operating with deficiencies in all areas, especially in the laboratories that are required of medical schools.
The decision affects 2,781 students who now need to transfer to other universities to continue their studies. The university will remain closed until corrections to the problems detected are made and evaluated by the Ministry.
In April the Ministry shut down Universidad Central Dominicana de Estudios Profesionales (UCDP) that had 150 students on its books.
As reported in Hoy, the authorities also shut down new admissions to the Universidad Nacional Evangelica (Unev) for lack of facilities, and the Universidad Odontologica Dominicana was given a year to improve its labs.
The Ministry also announced the closure of courses at the Universidad Agroforestal Fernando Arturo de Merino in Jarabacoa.
