Prosecutor General Radhames Jimenez Pena admitted to the press yesterday that the National Police, and not the prosecutor office, was directing criminal investigations. As reported in Hoy, Jimenez Pena has met with the new chief of the Police Major General Jose Polanco Gomez, National District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, Santiago prosecutor Jenny Berenice Aquino and assistant prosecutors Frank Soto and Bolivar Sanchez. Also attending yesterday's meeting was Presidential legal advisor Abel Rodriguez del Orbe.
Jimenez said that Major General Polanco Gomez has a very good relationship with his office. He said the meeting marked the re-launch of the relationships between prosecutors and police, "a new era where both the Police and the prosecutors understand their roles."
As reported in El Caribe, the prosecutor and the chief of the Police agreed that the prosecutors would direct the investigations against organized crime, drug trafficking and money laundering, to prevent weakly drafted cases that are vulnerable to being dismissed on technicalities.
