After facing financial problems, the PRD has decided to postpone the final full session of the Jose Francisco Pena Gomez Congress, set for this weekend, until the Political Commission of the party approves the regulations that will govern the meeting. The commission is scheduled to meet next Thursday. PRD president Miguel Vargas Maldonado said that the congress was being postponed for logistical reasons, but that the commissions in charge of organizing the event are continuing with their work.
"We wanted to meet in order to proceed with the work on the implementation of the congress, the nationwide consultations, and the activities needed for the final session of the congress", said Vargas Maldonado. The PRD president attended a meeting with the Organizing Commission that is headed by Tirso Mejia Ricart and Alejandro Abreu. During the meeting a Finance Commission for the congress was formed, with Ernesto Fabre, Jose Rafael Abinader, Milagros Ortiz Bosch, Peggy Cabral and Danilo del Rosario, among others, as its members. It was reported that the first disbursement of resources for the congress would be made on Monday. Vargas Maldonado said that they are open to any economic contributions towards the event, whose date was set, tentatively, for 11 and 12 September.
