Luz y Fuerza, the leading power generator company for the Samana peninsula, says that it can no longer provide electricity to the community 24 hours a day because the government is now asking it to purchase fuel paying full taxes. As reported in Hoy, because the power was reliable, few businesses had back-up power generators, complicating the situation.
On 13 August the company told its clients that it would be obliged to ration fuel and schedule blackouts. The company said the blackouts would last two hours during off peak hours. Luz y Fuerza says it is lobbying to get the government to restore their access to tax-exempt fuel.
The government recently announced that it would no longer allow tax-exempt fuel to companies making a profit from electricity sales.
