A former Army corporal who was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being caught with 51 kilograms of cocaine, "escaped" on his way back to the Najayo Prison after a visit to a doctor. The prisoner, Jimmy Oliver Rodriguez de la Cruz, who was convicted last June, was being accompanied by two guards when they were intercepted by unknown individuals at an unspecified point. The assailants, heavily armed, disarmed the guards and took the prisoner. According to information obtained by Diario Libre, the fugitive is the son of a former general of an unnamed branch of service. These versions indicate that the young man was taken away in a vehicle that belonged to his father. Even though the Department of Prisons, in a press release last night, say that Rodriguez de la Cruz had escaped, the possibility of a kidnapping was not discounted. Rodriguez de la Cruz was arrested on 15 September 2009 on Santo Domingo's Romulo Betancourt Avenue as he travelled in a vehicle in which the drugs were found in a hidden compartment.
