The coordinator of the New Model Jails, former UASD rector Roberto Santana has challenged the statement in the new book on Puerto Rican drug capo Jose David Figueroa published by President Leonel Fernandez's press secretary Rafael Nunez. In an op-ed piece in Hoy, public relations expert Jose Baez Guerrero refers to comments Santana made on TV about Nunez's claim that the government was able to arrest Figueroa in Puerto Rico after planting a spy in Mary Pelaez's cell in Najayo jail. Santana commented that the statement is a death sentence for Pelaez for leaking this information, in other words for having betrayed Figueroa Agosto. But Santana says that no authority could infiltrate Mary Pelaez's cell without his personal authorization or knowledge because the protocols in the new model would prevent this from happening.
"Santana's denial about some of the contents of Nunez's book is just an example of why Nunez was badly advised in publishing the book," writes Baez Guerrero. He comments that Nunez must have had access to information as a government official rather than as a journalist. "But things get better" he writes. "This Thursday I read in the press that the resplendent author is seeking movie rights. We live in the media age."
