View Full Version : Concierge for the "Gringo"
El Toro Blanco

During my last trip to Sosua (8/11-8/15), myself and my best friend were sitting at the bar on the corner of Calle Pedro Clisante and Dr. Rozen pounding Presidentes amongst a swarm of chicas (to be crushed at a later time).
My friend turned to me and said, "El Toro Blanco, I know now why you come down here." I tried to explain to him many times why I come down to Sosua, but you need to be in the middle of it to truly comprehend what this place is or does to you. The cold presidentes, the warm air, the smell of delicious food, the beautiful language in the air, and the smell of perfume wafting off the beautiful girls of Sosua, and the burning desire of every chica wanting to destroy you for a few pesos. That mix in the air is so damn addicting that it will drive you insane until your next trip to Sosua.
Then a distinctive spanglish voice that I have heard many times on the streets on NYC said "Are you guys having a great time? Hola, my name is Tony." Tony is a gentlemen/street hustler that spent 30yrs in the boroughs of NYC. He is Dominican decent and had recently moved back down to the DR. He introduced himself as the "Concierge to the Gringos" I asked my friend is this guy for real?
Tony is a guy will do anything for money. He will get you whatever you want: translation, surveillance or running purposes. ie: My friend and I decided to leave our cell phones in the safes just incase we get pocketed. If one of us where in the casino and the other, say "Classicos," Tony would run back and forth to communicate the other's where abouts. The Casino only serves these crappy little sandwiches. "Tony, go get us some street meat." In five minutes he’s back with the best tasting carne and platanos. He was good informing us on the where abouts of a particular chica my friend was interested in. At the end of the evening we would throw him 500 pesos and he would be on his way.
Toni, like everyone else in Sosua is hard hit by the economy and will do whatever necessary to make money. One evening we thanked him for helping us the other night and declined his services for that evening. Every time we turned around, there was Toni looking for a "job."
Just be careful who you make friends with in Sosua. Get to close to the locals and it may cost you, hopefully only a few pesos. Its nice to have someone you can turn to help with the language, asking about local chicas, or getting around town. However, you don’t want a guy like Toni to give a wrong impression about you. We ended his services simply because he was attracting attention as if we were two rich hot shots from the States.
- Stay under the radar. Everyone is watching.
- Be respectful. Everyone is watching
- Don't flash cash. Everyone is watching. Only carry what you need for the evening.
- Be mindful of where you are and what time it is. Should I really be walking down this street at 4am alone? Take a motoconcho.
- Are your "sosua friends" really your friends or looking for a piece of your wallet?
- Keep your cool. Don’t give the police a reason to approach you. They are watching.

He is Dominican decent and had recently moved back down to the DR.
I guess he doesn't tell everyone about how he was deported from the US, not just moved back to live in his home country. This guy is nothing but trouble.

Ditching him or anyone like him was smart. Smarter would have been avoiding him in the first place.
By using guys like him:
1. you cannot remain under the radar...he is in the middle of everything!
2. people assume you are foolish and have money to burn....he ain't free!
3. you expose yourself to potential trouble. He's not your friend and is only looking out for himself, at your expense!
You do not need this type of service at all in Sosua!

Are your "sosua friends" really your friends or looking for a piece of your wallet?
That's an easy one to answer. They are NEVER your friends.

I have seen him many times. I just ignore him and he seems to get the message. Sosua is too small to need a guide or helper.

Most of those dudes that say they" came back to the DR have been deported back to the DR". Or else they would be in Washington Heights.

I have had "OK" luck in the casino. They have all the usual table games you find the the Caribbean: Black Jack, roulette, 3-card, Stud, and Texas Hold'em. The week I was there the minimum on 3-card is 50 pesos and 100 on Black Jack. My experience with the Texas Hold'em table is the minimum is so low, no one rarely raises unless they have a good hand. Hardly any bluffing. They will try to get you to play in $US since the minimum is $5. Id rather play in Pesos with a min of 50rd. Why give them more of your money when the dealer is kicking your ass. given the low number of chips the casino holds. I "overheard" all the chips are tracked. A chip in the chip (anyone verify?). They can see exactly how much each person is holding/winning. Pending on which way the flow is they may switch up dealers or throw in an extra shuffle of the cards.
Drinks are free at the table. However, you may have to watch out for a particular pit boss. Skinny guy who's head looks like it was shrunken. Looks like "Beetlejuice." A few trips back it was our first night in the casino and he was on duty. We ordered drinks and he told us we had to pay. We learned the second night the drinks were free when playing at the table. We made an issue of it the second night but went on deaf ears. After a few minutes we knew it was hopeless to argue.
Most of the girls that you see in the casino are local senoritas and a few addicted chicas you may have seen earlier in the bars spending their money they blew so hard to get. Talk about blowing your money you blew to get. Vikki is there just about every night on the 3-card table. Petite chica with long blonde hair (no tits). Speaks good English
The exchange rate is a few pesos less than the street. street paid 36.6. The casino paid 33. The casino only takes Visa. No Amex incase you are looking for a way to get cash. One night I was low on cash so I went to the Cash teller with my Debit Check card and asked for US $500 advance. They took a photo copy of my drivers license and within a few minutes I had chips at the table. I played a couple hands, then took the chips back to the cashier for pesos. The casino was NOT HAPPY.
Why I decided to do this is because a lot of the ATM machines in Sosua will only spit out a couple hundred pesos at a time. It will then reject your request for withdrawal given the low daily withdrawal limit set by that lending institution. Just bring as much cash with you on the way down and extra in case of emergency. There is a small bank on the right when heading west just before La Passions. Usually you will see the guard at the door holding a 12Ga Mossberg Pistol grip shotgun. That ATM will allow you to take out at least 8,000 RD.
Hope this helps.

Some people, mongers no less, need more hand-holding than others. Though I wouldn't call it a "Concierge", it'd call it a babysitter!
I see those gringos on every trip. They don't have a clue where they are, are unable to communicate, and grin from ear-to-ear at everyone who even looks at them. Of course, the local tiguere (5ft5, 130 lbs.) becomes their best-friend within five minutes and they happily drink beers together (gringo pays!).
Glad it worked out for you.

Accepting an exchange rate of 33 just cries out, "I am a sucker." At the very least, you could have send your "concierge" to do better.
Your comment about ATMs in Sosua only spitting out a couple of hundred pesos at a time is just uninformed BS. Unless a couple of hundred pesos is all that you have in your name.
Let's keep it real, shall we?!

Any Dominican that approaches me here with a New York accent does not get much of my time. They have nothing to offer you.

Both..
I usually take what I plan to spend in cash...and hit the ATM if necessary.
I usually take short trips though.

ATM's, banks, cambios, even SuperSuper are fine (actually Super Super will meet the best price). Just don't change at the airport or at a casino. You get at least 10% less than the going rate.

We (myself and Naptime) have learned the hard way as far as using the ATM's. I always take the cash I think I will need, and then of course.....have to hit the ATM's for the last 2 days.
Just so you guy's know.....you HAVE to hit the savings button when it prompts you! Even if it is in your checking account, you HAVE to hit the savings button. It will come directly out of your checking account. It's something in the translation, or just a bug in the system!

WHY? Curious minds want to know!!
What you are saying is that taking it out off CHECKING won't work? Not sure I understand your drift.

For many people who have a chequing account it causes an error and therefore no money if they hit the chequing button. For some strange reason it works fine for them if they hit the savings account button.
I had my account hooked up to both buttons and either works for me....but I'm special!:p:lol:

Wow!! Not to answer this like a complete asshole....... but, how the fuck do I know????????
Don't ask me why!! How the fuck do I know???
It's NEVER worked for me, or Naptime, or our buddy "adios",or newbie Zach from our 5th trip!
Every time I hit the ATM, I have to take it out of SAVINGS, but when I look at my statement, it comes directly out of my CHECKING.

Any local guide on the streets of Sosua is looking out for himself.... having said that, if you don't mind paying over th eodds and getting a certain reputation of an easy mark, then you can take or leave their services...

They chatted in length about this on ISG . I couldn't get atm to work in Sosua except for one down by the Calypso.
The ISG guys said in Spanish everything works fine at the ATM's.
But in English that flaw your talking about [checking button doesn't work] doesn't permit you to withdraw cash.
So I guess if the ATM don't work; push the Savings button or try it in Spanish.

Aggressive aren't we? Let me restate it for you: "Banco Popular on Calle Dr. Alejo Martinez (around corner from Baileys) sucks for taking ATM withdrawls if you have a Wachovia ATM Check debit card. the max was 500-800 pesos per swipe. I guess it depends on what bank your with. Is that better "PI...?"

I was in Sosua for the very first time in June of this year. I think i may have ran into "Tony" hanging out in the very same spot. I did use his services occassionally and yes it did cost me, but not very much. It worked for me being my first time there as I didn't run into any ISOC memebers. I knew very little spanish, didn't know the area. He took me a few places, it cost me gas and beer and a small tip, sometimes some food.
He introduced me to some chicas that were drama free. Ran some errands for me and it worked out well. I may use him next time I am there or until I am a more seasoned vet!!
I realize that he is not a friend and I don't treat him as such. I don't trust anyone there. I did however need help when I was there and didn't have any complaints about his services. The man works hard and is trying to make a living like everyone else. I found him to be somewhat reliable and fair.
He will treat you well as he wants your business if you ever return. It is obviously easier for the chicas to make money selling their bodies.
All the guys can do is hope you need a motoconcho ride or runs some errands for you. Just be firm with him and let him know his boundaries and he is good. After I hired him I didn't get hassled as much by every hustler on the road.
"Trust noone and suspect everyone."

Different strokes for different folks. I just have an issue with the word concierge,I think the word flunky would be a better fit. Now if you want to pay some Sosua flunky to tell you about a chica, thats your business, but let me save you some money, "she selling pussy." I know some guys dont speak the language, but how difficult can it be to get chicas in Sosua? "Sucky, sucky, fucky fucky", is the international language of love, girls all over the world understand that, or you could use the proper Dominican term, "ficky, ficky". I have a problem with these Dominican low lifes, trying to earn money of the back of these chicas. I was sitting at the Cubana Cafe, one day, when one of my friends, joins us and he has is Dominican butt boy with him. I was trying to have a conversation with my friends when the Dominicano tried to dominate the convo. the whole time I am giving my boy dirty look for bringing that loser to our table. He commented, 100 pesos, I can buy a grande for the amount, I said "oh yeah, here's 100 pesos, go get a grande (GTFOOH). The guy continued to hang around, I asked want me to buy you a beer? He said sure, I said I just did, if you want to hang around you going to have to give me my 100 pesos back, the guy got the hint and finally left

Its very simple, These guys have the ability to zone in on guys who are literally on their first trip, or SHY or a COMBO of both. Once they verify their target, they wont let go. If you show them you are not the mark, with body language, not just words alone they go away.
I sat down next to a guy at Merengue, my last trip, we had a very nice talk about the scene on the strip etc, NY, etc. Only Towards the end, he asked me, u know what I do, dont you ? I said Yes, but we were just talking like 2 guys and you didnt try to hustle me, so I showed you the same respect back, and I bought him a beer my idea. I told him you do what you do to survive, I get it but u see me with a bunch of friends, we will just say hello and thats where it ends. I dont recall his name but was a cool dude since he was not targeting me, not that I would ever hang out with him. Its his place of work. But Im sure I will see him again though.
Some of them get it, some don't.

I wish I had their professional skills. Usually when I show guys around Puerto Plata it ends up costing me money. :)
Only at the weekend Dominican Billy told me the same. He used to take loads of guys out in the love wagon but no more.
We are talking averages, of course. Some guys are more than ready to pick up their share of the expenses, or even more.
Maybe I need to spend some time in Rykers and then get deported to hone my skills as a guide and pimp.

If there is one thing that bugs the hell out of me in the DR are these so-called self-appointed "friends" who follow you around in Sosua.
I can't remember the name of the street hustler who I run into all the time on Pedro Clisante, he always tries to hit me up for a 100 pesos. He's about 40 and talks with a NY accent. he always want's to take you to Passions. But he's no where as near as bad as my motoconch "buddy."
The guy who really bugged the hell out of me was a motoconcho who would literally cruise all over town looking for me. He even stopped by my motel a couple of times. I don't know why he would make such an effort to look for me because I never gave him that much cash, though when he would find me in a restaurant, I'd give him a cigarette or buy him a drink, occassionally.
A couple of days before I left, he offered to take any "unused" Dominican money I had left on me, so I wouldn't be bothered by having to cash it in at the bank....what a "friend," right?????
When I'd walk down Pedro Clisante, I'd literally have to peek around corners so I could avoid "my friend." What a pain in the ass that guy was (and is)!!!!!

Those losers (hustlers) irritate me. You a hustler know your market,( I have more street sense that you). Just because you saw me before, doesnt mean I am your friend. I was walking around the merinque bar, one night, and this dude, says hey whats up. I walk over to him thinking its a fellow monger I had met, then I realized I didnt know him, and he was a Dominicano. He said, "remember me, and I said, "no", and just walked away, my buddy thought that was so funny, he almost pissed his pants. One wise old man I met in Rio once told me, "the only money I brought down here is for pussy, I didnt bring money for that other stuff." If you want to befriend those guys be very careful. My 1st trip to Rio, I didnt speak any Portuguese, and I used to sit a Mia Pataca alone drinking chops (draft beer). This young Brazilian noticed this, and asked to join me, said he wanted to practice his English. I was very suspicious of him, because, when the girls would show up and invite me to the beach, he would always disappear. He would always show up before the girls came, and would tell me he could get me girls." come to my apt man, I have plenty of girls." My alarm systems, just started going off. I was thinking, 1st, you dont have any teeth in your mouth. How you gonna get girls? 2nd thought was, I know you trying to get me to your apt, so you and your boys can gut me like a fish, and 3rd, I should just cut to the chase and bust you across your head with this glass and get it over with, but relax, you on vacation. I'm not looking to make money on it and if we have a good time then I am happy to pay my share. It is just that guys often overlook the little expenses like motoconcho fares and tips and they all add up at the end of the evening.
Don't worry about it. It was just me being my usual grumpy self. I have had some good times meeting new members and going out.

If I wasn't blessed the way I have been id be hustling DvDs and fake bags on the streets of Cleveland or New York as we speak. These cats provide a service. No more or less than a concierge at a hotel ( which are my bread and butter in Vegas because i'm kinda spoiled on vacation). Now if you've been robbed ( and I mean literally) or straight hustled then OK. You have a reason to be a hater but if not then why blatantly diss someone that's trying to eat just like you? If you don't want it be a man and say " I'm good man, appreciate the offer". And bang, it's over. Maybe it's because I remember what it's like selling $5 bootleg dvds. Maybe it's because I grew up hustling and scraping by. If there's one thing I learned from my grandfather (who was actually a cold motherfucker) was ALWAYS show a man respect that's providing a service. You turn your noses up at these guys but shake the hands of those piece of shit bank HUSTLERS. The three piece suit wearing fucks that have cost many of us ALOT of money and jobs on this board. Get the fuck out of here. Personally I could care less about what you guys do or how you treat people but since I figure everyone on here has an opinion i'd throw mine in there. Much Love

I'll give guys like Tony a 100 pesos now & then, because I know times are tough and they are just trying to make a living. But I DON"T give them money everytime I see them...I'm NOT an ATM machine.
I do usually give the shoeshine boys money when I see them, and I even bought a couple of kids free meals and ate with them at the restaurant.
I'd like to help out everyone I can, but if I gave everyone money who asked for it in Sosua, I'd spend all my vacation dinero up in no time at all.

Nothing wrong with that, gotta feed them little kids.

There's a difference between trying to make a dollar, and nagging and trying to get over on someone for a dollar. I remember asking a motoconcho guy where can I get aspirin. He kept insisting on taking me and I kept insisting on directions. He finally gave in and simply told me where it was. I was there in under a minute. It took me longer to try to get him not to hustle me than to actually get to the pharmacy. These guys are annoying because they don't know when to quit. How many times can they offer you the exact same shit in less than five minutes? I didn't need a ride two minutes ago, and I don't need one now. It got to the point where I had to walk down Pedro Clisante with the same mean mug and give them the same nasty curt response that I give wannabe "hustlers" when I'm walking in Downtown Brooklyn. That was the only way they "permanently" got the message after seeing me frequent the strip that I didn't want to be bothered. I used to earn money on the street too (legally) and these guys give the word "hustling" a bad name. There's an expression called "smooth hustler" and these guys are in no way "smooth". They are arrogant and have this approach where they try to play people like idiots and that last part is what is more insulting and bothersome than anything else. They feel as if they're entitled to your money and can feed you any bullshit to get it.

My lady says i'm cold because I adopted one of those third world children and it PISSES me off every month paying. lol. Children always get a kick back from me because you never know how big a difference that minor act of kindness could make in their life. To be honest I rarely even patronize dudes like that. My point was the level of hatred some guys on here have with no real valid reason. Again, this is perceptive but some of the reasoning was vague and a result of guys just not being ballsy about not wanting something. OF COURSE their persistent. You have to be. I NEVER patronize a lazy hustler. If a guy is persistent to serve me then I feel he's gonna perform. Why the hell would I want a lazy person doing anything for me at all? lol

These cats provide a service.
Exactly what service do they provide? They are at best totally useless parasites. At worst they are either thieves or conmen or they distract you (intentionally or not) so that the real thieves or conmen have a clear run.
What service do they provide? Find you a chica? In Sosúa? Gimme a break! And if you cannot find your own way to a bank/pharmacy/taxi parada or whatsoever without the help of these subhuman scum then you should not be leaving your own country and maybe not your mother's apron strings.

I hear ya, and I used to feel the same way when I first started traveling to the DR. But experience has taught me that this is a gringo way of thinking that is likely to get you screwed over in the tourist areas of the DR, Sosua in particular.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of honest locals there. But your idea of the "noble" hustler just trying to make a buck, really doesn't apply to a lot of the guys who prowl Sosua preying upon the new and clueless. Yeah, they're trying to make a buck, but most Sosua "concierges" have no problem screwing over mongers in the process. They are never working to your benefit. And their desire to make a buck is usually coupled with a sense of entitlement to your pesos because you are a gringo, and you have more than enough to share. And they aren't even providing a necessary or valuable service. Unless, that is, you feel the need to pay much more for everything.
Bottom line, these guys are more than mere hustlers. They are predators. And because you are a gringo, they generally hold you in far less regard than you seem to hold them. Personally, I really don't feel the need to patronize guys like this. So I generally hit them with the ice grill and a shake of the head when they approach.

They also work with the Police if they can set u up with some Drugs.. Thats a major score for everyone. They tell you where to buy them, and then they tell the cops when you are holding, and you are TOAST.... These guys would sell their own Mothers .
Anyone who does business with these Thieves, even after reading the good advice offered here, deserves everything thats coming to him.

I've gotten some great CD's (most actually played, lol) and shoe shines. These guys may not be the ones Weyland's talking about. At most they were mildly annoying, not parasitic.

Definitely. I had at least two or three of these guys yell out that they could get me coke and weed. I don't do drugs but even if I did why the hell would I buy shit from someone who announces it to the whole street. They're very easy to ignore or walk by but it just ticked me off being approached as if they had a shot in hell at my money with some half-assed sales pitch because I'm some dumb ass wealthy American. It's very condescending to me as a man. I came to Sosua to fuck, not for anybody to try and fuck me over.

Yeah, me too. And most of my collection of dominican porn was bought from street vendors. A lot of street vendors are harmless, and just trying to make a living. But they're different breed than the so called "concierges". Street vendors are actually providing a service.

They help guys with whatever they do. I've seen several guys on here that have had fine experiences with these dudes. Thats YOUR OPINION to if you need a guy like this or not. Clearly some do and it's not up to you how any of us decide to spend our money. I could say the same for any profession here in the states. Why pay a mechanic when you can get off you fat lazy ass and fix it yourself? Please. I'm not here to convince you and frankly I know your not gonna change my mind but you clearly have some hate in your heart bro. "subhuman" really. Man I greatly appreciate your approach to this post. If you look back at my post I said I get the hate from some of the guys that have been dusted in the past. I'm not even defending these dudes. What I am defending is the right to survive and grind. Someone said "anyone that gets hustle by these guys deserves it". Thats absolutely right. But to treat them ALL as if they aren't people is beyond my moral compass man. Just think of all the people that WE both know that people here in the US would call "scum" or "parasites". I find it especially disturbing some of the sheer judgemental hate on a MONGER site. How in the world can we throw stones. lol. If cats were approaching this with your level of class I wouldn't have even posted here at all. You made valid points.

Do you even have a CLUE what it takes to get DEPORTED FROM NYC , AFTER SERVING some time in Jail , MAYBE EVEN PRISON for 5-10 ?
MOST of these guys are hardened CRIMINALS, and you compare them to an Auto mechanic who is working with his hands to make an honest living to feed his family ??
And u defend criminals and accuse Weyland of having "hate in his heart"
Holy F***... Now ive seen it all.

I know EXACTLY what it takes to be deported from the US. You ASSUME that most of these guys are deported criminals. Where in the world are the facts on this. But overall it doesnt matter if they are criminals or not. Wasn't my point. My problem is classifying an entire group of people based on rumors. As I said before "If you've been robbed ( and I mean literally) or screwed then fine". I get that. I NEVER said that I thought what they did was valuable to us. Go back and read my original post on this. Weyland is a grown man and can post whatever he wants just like me. His ENTIRE post painted a picture of an entire community as conmen and subhumans. He's entitled to his opinion as I am mine. Notice how he and DCIronman said basically the same thing YET DC didn't resort to the same hateful rhetoric. I don't know Weyland from Adam and can only judge base on post as you all can judge me based on mine. I compared them to mechanics ( who many ARE criminals and conmen which is well documented) to illustrate the flaw in his logic. I don't live my life on hearsay and assumptions. Growing up I saw exactly how being "characterized" can affect you and the way people see/treat you. This thread has gone the exact same direction as the Santiago Sisters STD thread. This monger said this. And I heard from this monger that. All that aside. I would hope that we as a CLEARLY frowned upon community could have a bit more open mindedness. We do live in a glass house after all.lol

Don't get it twisted. Because I haven't been to DR or on this board long doesn't mean I'm a sucker. If you read each of my post I NEVER said I'd use their services at all. Never said they were beneficial to me. My entire purpose was to state MY OPINION on these men just like everyone else has. DR is no more shady than Mexico or Eastern Europe so don't try to make it seem like I'm some naive chump. You talking out of your ass and jumping on the bandwagon.
