On Friday, 20 August President Leonel Fernandez hosted the 1,280 recipients of the 2010 scholarships for international studies at the Presidential Palace. The scholarship program is run by the Ministry of Higher Education (MESCyT).
Speaking during the event, Minister of Higher Education Ligia Amada Melo said that the students have received scholarships to 24 universities in 9 countries, including 11 community colleges in New York.
Melo said the program, which started under the Fernandez administration in 2004, has benefited 6,280 students, including the group that leaves this August. She said the goal is to train 10,000 young people by 2012, primarily in masters programs in the United States, Spain, France, Italy, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico, Cuba and Brazil.

Engineering and architecture 157 (12.27%)
Management 153 (11.95%),
Information and communication technologies 88 (6.88%),
Arts 71 (5.55%),
Legal and political sciences 63 (4.92%),
Education 58 (4.53%),
Humanities 57 (4.45%),
Economy and finance 58 (4.53%),
Services 47 (4.45%),
Basic sciences 14 (1.09%),
Applied sciences 11 (0.86%),
Agriculture and veterinary sciences 2 (0.16%)
