The number of legislators receiving comfortable pension payments from the state has increased from 152 to 172, with 20 more senators and deputies now on the list. The senators and deputies receive 60-80% of their last wage. Senators receive RD$125,000 and deputies RD$175,000 that is used to calculate the pensions. The minimum wage in the DR is RD$7,360.00. The law establishes pensions of 60% for legislators aged 60 years on retirement, and of 70% for anyone aged 60 or more who has served two terms, and 80% for anyone aged 55 or more who has served three terms. Legislators who have served four terms, and have spent three years or more as president of the Senate or Chamber of Deputies get 80% of their wage.
Hoy reports that the pensions are costing the country RD$15 million a month so far.
