So far, 120 women have been killed by their spouses this year, according to statistics from the Gender Violence Prevention Unit. A total of 170 cases was reported in 2009, according to Listin Diario. There is a very high rate of feminicide in the DR compared to Spain, where 40 women were murdered by their spouses last year out of a population five times that of the DR. Last year, feminicides in the DR were 32% down compared to 2008.
