A rental car was used for the "escape" of Najayo inmate Jimmy Oliver Rodriguez de los Santos, a former army corporal sentenced to 20 years in jail for trafficking of 51.8 kilos of cocaine. He "escaped" while returning to Najayo after a medical visit and was "intercepted" by a SUV. Accompanying him was Dominga Gladys Pena Luna and warden Orlando Romero Perez, a police sergeant, as reported in Hoy.
The prisoner, Jimmy Oliver Rodriguez de la Cruz, who was convicted last June, was being accompanied by two guards when they were intercepted by unknown individuals at an unspecified point. The heavily armed assailants disarmed the guards and took the prisoner. According to Diario Libre, the fugitive is the son of a former general of an unnamed branch of service. These versions indicate that the young man was taken away in a vehicle belonging to his father. Although the Department of Prisons said at the time that Rodriguez de la Cruz had escaped, the possibility of a kidnapping was not discounted. Rodriguez de la Cruz was arrested on Santo Domingo's Romulo Betancourt Avenue on 15 September 2009 while traveling in a vehicle in which drugs were found in a hidden compartment.
