The DR has defeated Italy in the 18th Edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix that matched the 12 best teams in the world. The game was a tough one: 23-25, 32-30, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-13. The DR finished in eighth place, winning important games against Germany, China and Italy, and six losses.
Dominican Republic coach Marcos Kwiek said: "I'm happy today, especially winning in this way. Since our team is young and we completely lost our last game, it was hard to recover. Before the game, I told my players to enjoy today's game. The Italian team is good, so today's win means a lot to us, and the players will not forget today's game."
Dominican Republic captain Karla Echenique added: "I'm really glad about today's victory. Italy's a great team but we also had good defense and offense. We played in waves but in the end we were able to do it."
Italy coach Massimo Barbolini: "First, I want to congratulate the Dominican Republic team. I think this was the right result because they played all the match better than us. We made too many mistakes - 30 - and we were not able to be strong with our serve. This is a big problem."
The DR made eighth place in the preliminary round of the 18th Edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix, not making the five winners of the preliminary round plus China play for the champion for 2010.
