Long gone are the days when the members of the Senate were poor politicians. Now the trend is for senators to be politicians who have made fortunes, as reported in Hoy.
24 out of 32 senators have presented financial statements declaring assets totaling more than RD$700 million. Of the 24 legislators who have presented their finances, the smallest fortune is RD$9.5 million. Hoy speculates that the documents still do not reflect the full reality of all the legislators' assets.
It mentions the case of senator Felix Vasquez of Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) with RD$124.9 million, while others say that La Altagracia senator, Amable Aristy Castro, has the largest fortune. Aristy has chosen not to take up his Senate seat for the third time so as not to leave his post at the Dominican Municipal League and has not presented any sworn statement of assets.
Hoy reports that after Vasquez, and "logically Amable", the third with the largest worth is Monte Plata senator Charlie Marriotti who declared RD$68.1 million, and says he is owed RD$48 million of this amount.
The Senator for San Jose de Ocoa Carlos Antonio Castillo declared RD$64.8 million. Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez says he has RD$62.8 million. Hato Mayor's senator, Ruben Dario Cruz Ubiera declared RD$45 million. Amilcar Romero, of San Francisco de Macoris reported RD$35.8 million. La Vega senator Euclides Sanchez says he has RD$31.5 million, and Felix Nova Paulino of Monsenor Nouel is down with RD$30 million.
Others are: Juan Orlando Mercedes Sena of Independencia with RD$27 million, Wilton Guerrero of Peravia (Bani) with RD$19.4 million, Dionis Sanchez of Pedernales with RD$18.5 million, Puerto Plata senator Francis Vargas with RD$15 million, Cristina Lizardo of Santo Domingo with RD$11.8 million, La Romana senator Amarilis Santana with RD$9.8 million, Maria Trinidad Sanchez senator Aristides Victoria Yeb with RD$9.5 million.
