Migration Department records show that 18,000 Haitians are currently legally resident in the DR. Another 60,000 are recorded as having work permits for the construction and farming industries, including the sugar industry. Vice Admiral Sigrido Pared Perez told El Dia that 50,000 Haitians work in the sugar industry. He told the newspaper that the Specialized Border Control Corps (Cesfront) has absolute control of entry at the border. He has said previously that Haitian migration has increased 15% after the earthquake. The government expects the 2010 Census will provide a realistic estimate of the number of Haitians living in the country. Estimates are that one million Haitians live in the country.
