The Dominican College of Visual Artists (Codap) is fighting to keep its headquarters on Calle El Conde, in the Colonial City. In 1991, the late President Joaquin Balaguer donated the premises on Calle El Conde, between Las Damas and Isabel la Catolica to Codap, but this May they were notified that Tesifon Comercial, S.A. was asking for it to be handed over. They say that the Corde, the government body that owns the premises, had sold it. Codap president Antonio Guadalupe has decided to fight the sale. They say that the price of RD$3,378,000 is 26% of the value of the property, and the decision to sell was neither consulted with the President, nor sent to Congress as ordered in Law 141-97 and the Constitution because it is a property worth more than RD$20,000. Their legal counsel is Luis Felipe Rodriguez Acevedo who says that the sale is illegal and violates the Constitution and laws, including Law 318 on the cultural heritage of the state.
